Bills have been filed in both the Senate and House of Representatives seeking to postpone the November 2026 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to 2028.
Sen. Francis Escudero’s measure also proposes extending the term of barangay and SK officials from four to five years to give them more time to implement community programs.
House lawmakers cited the ongoing energy crisis and rising fuel costs as reasons for delaying the elections, saying frequent polls could be costly and disrupt local projects.
Escudero said longer terms could help improve public service and ensure continuity in community programs.
The Commission on Elections, however, said it remains prepared to hold the elections as scheduled on Nov. 2.
