The Philippines, as ASEAN chair, hosted a meeting on Jan. 22 with Burmese political and ethnic stakeholders to discuss Myanmar’s ongoing political crisis.
DFA Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, serving as the ASEAN Chair’s special envoy to Myanmar, led the first Myanmar Stakeholders’ Meeting in Tagaytay.
Discussions focused on advancing the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, which calls for an immediate cessation of violence, constructive dialogue, mediation, humanitarian assistance, and a special envoy visit to the parties in Myanmar.
Lazaro encouraged delegates to provide active and meaningful input on de-escalating tensions, facilitating aid, addressing transnational crime, and fostering political dialogue.
Earlier this month, Lazaro also met Myanmar’s senior leadership in Naypyitaw to continue efforts toward implementing the consensus and supporting peace in the country.
