Abra Lone District Rep. JB Bernos welcomed the launch of the Department of Agriculture’s Animal Vaccine Development Program (AVDP), saying it will strengthen the country’s livestock sector and improve food security.
He said developing local animal vaccines would provide cheaper and more effective protection against local disease strains while reducing dependence on imports.
The program, led by the DA with partner agencies and universities, includes the establishment of a Biosafety Level 3 facility for research, training, and disease preparedness.
It will focus on vaccine development for African swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease and is funded with P140.9 million over three years.
Bernos stressed that supporting Filipino scientists is key to ensuring a stable food supply and a more resilient livestock industry.
