Abra Rep. JB Bernos has called for immediate structural integrity checks on major infrastructure nationwide following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8.
Citing the quake’s reported death toll of at least 53 people and the displacement of nearly 7,000 residents, Bernos said roads, bridges, ports, schools, and government buildings must be assessed to ensure they can withstand future disasters.
He said a comprehensive review would help identify structures that need rehabilitation or should be taken out of service.
The lawmaker also renewed his call for the passage of the proposed Philippine Building Act, which seeks to update the country’s 1977 National Building Code.
Bernos further urged authorities to hold building owners and government officials accountable for failing to comply with construction standards, warning that negligence could cost lives.
