Malacañang on November 5 urged Universal Robina Corp. (URC) to immediately address the ethanol wastewater spill in Bais Bay, Negros Oriental, warning that legal charges may follow.
Around 255,000 cubic meters of wastewater leaked after a 15-meter dike broke, affecting 400 hectares in the Tañon Strait, a major marine protected area.
President Marcos has been briefed, and containment efforts are underway, while URC has pledged to clean up the spill.
The incident has impacted about 3,000 local fisherfolk, prompting calls for government assistance, and the towns of Bais and Manjuyod have declared a state of calamity.
Authorities also warned residents to avoid fishing and collecting aquatic organisms until the area is safe.
