Opposition Rep. Chel Diokno has filed a bill seeking a P52.8 billion supplemental budget to help transport workers, farmers, and OFWs cope with rising fuel prices amid the Middle East crisis.
House Bill 8495 proposes P12 billion for fuel subsidies, P2.8 billion for agricultural support, and P38 billion for emergency assistance and reintegration of displaced OFWs.
Lawmakers warned that the Philippines’ heavy dependence on imported fuel makes households and key sectors vulnerable to price spikes.
Current government funds for transport, agriculture, and OFWs are insufficient to address the escalating economic impact.
Senators Francis Pangilinan and Erwin Tulfo are also pushing for higher fisherfolk subsidies and inclusion of gasoline in the upcoming fuel tax relief measures.
