The National Security Council warned that China’s recent submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile test could undermine regional security and stability.
National Security Adviser Eduardo SL Oban Jr. said the missile launch raises concerns about Beijing’s strategic intentions despite China’s claim that it was a routine military exercise.
China said the missile, carrying a dummy warhead, was launched into the Pacific Ocean as part of its annual training program and complied with international law.
Oban urged China to prioritize peace and respect the rights of other states instead of conducting displays of military power.
The statement came ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award, which invalidated China’s sweeping claims in the South China Sea.
