Sen. Francis Pangilinan condemned China’s recent two-day military drills around Taiwan, saying peace cannot be built on threats of invasion.
He warned that the exercises created tension for the Taiwanese people, Filipinos in Taiwan, and the wider East and Southeast Asian region.
Pangilinan emphasized that true peace requires respect for self-determination, free from coercion by any power.
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. also criticized China’s actions for undermining regional stability.
In response, the Chinese Embassy in Manila reiterated that Taiwan is part of China and rejected the Philippines’ remarks, urging officials to avoid interfering in its internal affairs.
