President Marcos is considering allowing local government units (LGUs) to receive direct funding to speed up classroom construction nationwide.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Education (DepEd), and LGUs are set to sign a memorandum of agreement to coordinate efforts in addressing the classroom backlog.
Under the plan, LGUs will manage funds while DPWH and DepEd oversee construction and implementation.
There are currently 2,370 classrooms left to build, with targets to complete 200 by December 2025 and 2,000 by the third quarter of 2026.
The move comes amid criticism that flood control projects, which faced anomalies, were prioritized over classroom construction.
