President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Department of Energy to secure additional fuel sources despite the country currently having a 45-day supply.
He supported Energy Secretary Sharon Garin’s assurance that fuel is sufficient until early May but stressed the need for contingency planning due to uncertainties in Middle East supply.
The Philippines is exploring alternative sources from countries including Russia, Japan, China, and South Korea, though contracts are not yet finalized.
Marcos also issued Executive Order No. 110, declaring a one-year national energy emergency to ensure a stable fuel supply and protect essential services.
The EO mandates several government agencies, including the Departments of Transportation, Social Welfare, Trade, and Finance, to coordinate a whole-of-government response to mitigate the impact of energy-related disruptions.
