The Department of Health (DOH) reported a 6% increase in leptospirosis cases nationwide, with 2,177 infections recorded from January 4 to June 6, 2026, compared to 2,046 cases during the same period last year.
Most of the reported cases involved farmers and individuals exposed to mud or floodwaters, prompting the agency to remind the public to take extra precautions.
The DOH advised people to wash exposed body parts with clean water and soap, wear boots if they have wounds on their feet, and avoid wading through floodwaters when they have open cuts.
It also urged those experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, red eyes, and chills to seek immediate medical consultation.
The department warned against self-medicating with antibiotics and said doxycycline is available at health facilities following a doctor’s assessment.
