The Philippines’ largest crayfish nursery officially opened Friday in Candaba, Pampanga, aiming to boost aquaculture and create income opportunities for rural communities.
The 1,280-square-meter facility, built by Farm Fresh Early Catch Inc. with support from Taiwan’s Da Shin Biotech Ltd. and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, will produce Australian Redclaw crayfish, a species in high market demand.
The nursery has 16 tanks capable of producing 48,000 fry every two weeks, using water-recycling technology to minimize freshwater use and protect local ecosystems.
Farm Fresh plans to supply fry to its own ponds, which currently yield 30 tons of market-size crayfish annually, and intends to partner with other growers as the industry expands nationwide.
The project is expected to generate over 3,000 jobs and help position the Philippines as a key player in regional and global aquaculture markets.
