Senate President Pro Tempore Ping Lacson filed Senate Bill 1557 to grant the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) broader powers amid the Philippines’ ongoing corruption crisis.
The bill seeks to expand the list of offenses and individuals covered, including real estate buyers, lawyers, accountants, online gaming operators, and virtual asset service providers.
It also proposes giving the AMLC subpoena powers and the ability to conduct bank inquiries, freeze transactions, and file civil forfeiture petitions without relying on a court.
Lacson said the measure is crucial to prevent the Philippines from returning to the Financial Action Task Force’s grey list for insufficient anti-money laundering safeguards.
The proposed amendments come after delays in freezing assets of officials allegedly involved in massive kickback schemes, highlighting the need for stronger AMLC authority.
