President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the inauguration of the P1.21-billion Hibulangan Reservoir Irrigation Project in Leyte, which will provide reliable irrigation to about 2,750 hectares of farmland across Villaba, Matag-ob, and Kananga.
The project is expected to boost agricultural productivity and benefit over 1,800 farmers by reducing dependence on rainfall and costly water pumps, with some farmers projecting up to a 40% increase in harvests.
Marcos emphasized the importance of irrigation in strengthening the agriculture sector and urged local officials to develop the area for tourism and fishing to create more livelihood opportunities.
Originally launched in 2013, the irrigation facility is now fully operational after years of development.
Officials and farmers welcomed the project, saying it will improve yields, reduce costs, and strengthen food production in Eastern Visayas.
