The Energy Regulatory Commission has been urged to implement staggered electricity rate increases to prevent consumers from experiencing “bill shock” amid rising generation costs.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian made the call during a Senate hearing, warning that simultaneous increases in electricity, fuel, and rice prices could heavily burden households.
He said a staggered system was already used during the COVID-19 pandemic and can be applied again to ease the impact on consumers.
Gatchalian also stressed the need for better regulation of electricity price adjustments to protect low-income families.
In response, ERC said it will review its advisory and consider lowering the trigger for implementing rate increases.
