Fil-Canadian Leylah Fernandez defeated Czech teenager Tereza Valentova 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 to win the Japan Open on Sunday.
Fernandez, ranked world No. 27, secured her second title of the year after winning the Washington, DC Open in July.
Valentova, 18, was playing in her first WTA final and had a strong tournament, including a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alex Eala earlier.
Fernandez praised Valentova for her impressive performance despite the loss.
The victory highlights Fernandez’s growing success on the WTA Tour.
