Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga has called for the reinstatement of the death penalty for individuals involved in illegal logging and mining in the Sierra Madre Mountain Range.
He proposed execution by firing squad, arguing that the mountain range serves as Luzon’s natural defense against typhoons and protects areas like Metro Manila and Cavite from flooding.
Barzaga made the statement following reports that Typhoon Uwan weakened after passing over the Sierra Madre, highlighting the importance of preserving the region.
At 27, Barzaga has previously suggested the return of capital punishment for repeat littering offenders and those committing heinous crimes.
The Philippines abolished the death penalty in 2006, with lethal injection being the last method used.
