BPO workers in the Philippines are urging an expansion of work-from-home arrangements to ease the financial strain caused by rising fuel prices amid the Middle East conflict.
The BPO Industry Employees Network (BIEN Pilipinas) highlighted that higher oil costs increase transport fares, food prices, and electricity bills, squeezing workers on fixed wages.
The group also called for the suspension of fuel excise taxes and VAT to lessen the economic burden on households.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Free Workers (FFW) supports flexible work arrangements, including WFH or a four-day work week, as long as these remain voluntary and do not reduce wages.
Both groups emphasized that remote workers should be protected with privacy, safety, and right-to-disconnect safeguards, while those unable to work from home should receive transport or energy support.
