DILG BACKS PNP CHECKS ON LICENSED GUN OWNERS’ HOMES

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) proposed allowing police to inspect the homes of legal gun owners to check firearm safekeeping practices.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the proposal follows recent school shootings in Tacloban and Zamboanga involving government-issued or legally owned firearms.

Gun owners would be informed before inspections and given a checklist on proper firearm storage.

Remulla stressed that owning and carrying a gun is a privilege and called for stricter safeguards.

He also urged Congress to repeal the law that reduced penalties for illegal firearm possession and made it bailable.
