Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged in a California court that Meta did not disclose that early adoption of some teen safety tools was as low as 1% to 2%, despite promoting the features publicly.
The admission came during a lawsuit brought by 29 US states, which accuse Meta of designing its platforms to keep children engaged and collecting their data while misleading the public about safety efforts.
Internal documents reportedly showed that Instagram’s Take a Break tool had an adoption rate of 1.8%, while Quiet Mode reached 8.7% during the period discussed in court.
Former Meta employees testified that the tools were ineffective and that making them automatically available to younger users could have reduced engagement, potentially conflicting with Meta’s advertising-driven business model.
If Meta loses the case, the states could seek around $200 billion in penalties, while CEO Mark Zuckerberg is also expected to testify.
