The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said the suspect in the shooting incident at the Senate building was a volunteer driver and not an official employee of the agency.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag identified the suspect as 44-year-old Mel Oragon, who was arrested after allegedly firing shots inside the Senate complex on Wednesday night.
Authorities said NBI agents were deployed to the nearby GSIS building for security assistance and not to arrest Senator Ronald dela Rosa, contrary to rumors circulating online.
The Philippine National Police is investigating the incident, including the possibility that the shooting was staged or used as a diversionary tactic.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also denied claims that the government ordered an operation against Dela Rosa inside the Senate premises.
