Sen. Kiko Pangilinan filed a bill seeking to abolish the travel tax to ease the financial burden on Filipino travelers.
The measure, Senate Bill 1843, aims to boost travel, increase spending on transport, accommodation, and services, and strengthen the Philippines as a competitive tourist destination.
Current travel tax rates are P2,700 for first-class and P1,620 for economy-class passengers.
The bill proposes funding programs through the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority instead of passengers and includes tax refunds for trips after the law takes effect.
Sen. Joel Villanueva has also filed a similar bill, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called travel tax abolishment a priority for Congress.
