House Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos on Wednesday defended the House-approved anti-political dynasty bill, saying it was the version that gained the broadest support among lawmakers.
He acknowledged concerns that the measure had been watered down but said a stricter proposal would not have secured enough votes, given that many House members belong to political families.
Marcos stressed that the approved bill is not yet a law and is intended to start discussions, with further amendments expected once the Senate passes its own version.
He said differences between the House and Senate versions would be reconciled during bicameral conference committee deliberations.
The House approved House Bill No. 8389 on third reading on June 3, although the measure has drawn criticism from opposition lawmakers and advocacy groups who say it fails to effectively curb political dynasties.
