The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved on second reading House Bill No. 8389, or the proposed Anti-Political Dynasty Act, which seeks to prohibit political dynasties and promote equal access to public office.
The measure bars spouses and relatives within the second degree of consanguinity or affinity from simultaneously holding or running for elective positions in the same locality.
It was approved through viva voce voting and is backed by Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III, Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander Marcos, and 173 co-authors.
Lawmakers said the bill aims to strengthen public trust in government and fulfill the 1987 Constitution’s mandate to prohibit political dynasties.
The proposal will take effect in the next elections once enacted and requires the Commission on Elections to issue implementing rules within 90 days.
