RISING FUEL COSTS PUT PRESSURE ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT FARES

The government is considering fare hikes and subsidies as fuel prices rise due to renewed tensions between the United States and Iran, Malacañang said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez to review possible measures to support affected sectors.

Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said the government must balance assistance for transport workers while preventing further increases in commodity prices.

The review includes a proposed P1 fare increase sought by transport group Pasang Masda.

The government had earlier suspended a planned fare hike and provided cash aid, fuel subsidies, and discounts for public utility vehicle drivers.
