Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that the Philippines has struck gas at the Camago-3 well in the Malampaya gas fields offshore Palawan, part of an $893-million Phase 4 project led by Enrique Razon and partners.
The Camago-3 well produces up to 60 million standard cubic feet of gas per day and holds about 2.5 times more recoverable gas than the earlier Malampaya East 1 discovery.
Together, the two wells are expected to extend the life of the Malampaya field by around six years, providing steadier and cheaper energy for the country.
Marcos said the gas from Malampaya costs P4.80 per kilowatt-hour, much lower than imported liquefied natural gas at P10.30.
First gas delivery is targeted by the fourth quarter of 2026, with additional wells like Bagong Pag-asa already underway to bolster supply amid the ongoing global fuel crisis.
