The Philippine Heart Association (PHA) has called for a standardized national framework for cardiovascular screening of athletes to prevent sudden cardiac death.
In a joint statement, the PHA emphasized a systematic, evidence-based approach adapted to the Philippine context, including consistent protocols for both pediatric and adult athletes, better access to diagnostics, and clear referral pathways for at-risk individuals.
The association noted that undiagnosed heart conditions remain the leading cause of sudden cardiac death among athletes, and while such cases are rare, they have serious medical and societal impacts.
Routine preparticipation evaluations, including medical history, physical exams, and ECGs, can help identify at-risk athletes and enable timely intervention.
The PHA stressed that the Philippines currently lacks national guidelines, resulting in inconsistent practices and potential missed diagnoses, and urged collaboration with stakeholders to implement the framework.
