The Philippines has been elected to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, securing a seat until 2030 after receiving 106 votes from 156 member states.
The election took place during the 11th General Assembly of States Parties to the 2003 Convention at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
As a committee member, the Philippines will help shape global policies on protecting living cultural heritage and promote climate resilience, inclusivity, and capacity-building initiatives.
The country will also take part in evaluating nominations for UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said the election reflects the international community’s recognition of the Philippines’ rich and diverse cultural heritage.
