Several lawyers have filed a complaint before the Pasay City prosecutor’s office seeking an investigation into Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro over his alleged continued use of a Maltese passport.
The complainants alleged that Teodoro made false statements in his Philippine passport application, potentially violating the Philippine Passport Act of 1996 and provisions of the Revised Penal Code on falsification of public documents.
They asked prosecutors to subpoena his passport records and documents proving he had renounced his Maltese citizenship.
The complaint cited an alleged inconsistency between a Maltese passport reportedly valid from 2016 to 2026 and a Philippine passport application filed in 2017.
The Department of National Defense has maintained that Teodoro renounced his Maltese citizenship before running for senator in the 2022 elections.
