The water level at Angat Dam continued to decline amid extreme heat across the country, falling to 178.21 meters on May 16, below its 180-meter minimum operating level, according to the National Water Resources Board (NWRB).
NWRB Executive Director Sevillo David Jr. said the situation remains manageable for Metro Manila’s domestic water supply, which is being prioritized despite the dam’s low level.
However, authorities have already reduced water allocation for irrigation and may suspend releases next week if the water level continues to drop.
David said the possible suspension is not expected to immediately affect farmers since many areas are already nearing harvest season.
The NWRB also urged the public to conserve water as concerns grow over a possible El Niño phenomenon that could develop in the coming months and further reduce rainfall needed to replenish major dams.
