The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said on World Press Freedom Day that red-tagging and harassment of media workers continue, criticizing the government for failing to ensure journalists’ safety.
It reported 242 violations of media freedom under the Marcos administration, including 10 journalist killings since 2022, with many cases still unresolved.
The group also condemned the continued detention of journalist Frenchie Mae Cumpio and cited the killing of community journalist RJ Ledesma during a military operation in Negros Occidental.
NUJP warned that red-tagging, legal threats, surveillance, and online attacks persist, despite a Supreme Court ruling declaring red-tagging a threat to life and liberty.
It urged the public to defend press freedom, as international groups also flagged the ongoing repression of journalists in the Philippines.
