Incoming US Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Lipton met with Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez in Washington on May 19 ahead of his deployment to Manila.
The meeting came a day after the US Senate narrowly confirmed Lipton and other diplomatic appointees backed by Donald Trump.
Discussions focused on cooperation in critical minerals, energy, advanced manufacturing, supply chains, and the Philippines’ ASEAN chairship and bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Romualdez described the meeting as productive in a post on X.
Lipton, a businessman and longtime Trump associate, is the first non-career US diplomat appointed to the Philippines in decades and has pledged to uphold the Mutual Defense Treaty and address China’s unlawful expansion in the region.
