The NBA Board of Governors has authorized the league to explore potential expansion teams in Seattle and Las Vegas, which could increase the league to 32 franchises.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the process is multi-year, with new teams potentially debuting in the 2028–29 season, but emphasized that expansion is not guaranteed.
The league has engaged PJT Partners to evaluate market conditions, ownership groups, arena infrastructure, and financial implications for the proposed teams.
Seattle, which lost the SuperSonics in 2008, and Las Vegas, a city already hosting NBA Summer League games, are the primary focus due to their strong sports markets.
Any expansion would require approval from 23 of the 30 NBA governors, with franchise values expected to range between $7 billion and $10 billion.
