President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Russia will deport and repatriate 24 Filipinos who had been detained for nine months after he raised their case with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Kazan.
Marcos said the Filipinos were scheduled for release and deportation as early as the following day, allowing them to return to their families in the Philippines.
According to the president, Putin was initially unaware of the detainees’ situation and questioned why they remained in custody without being charged.
Marcos said the Russian leader later assured him that the matter would be resolved.
In a Facebook statement, Marcos thanked Putin and the Russian Federation for their assistance in securing the Filipinos’ release following their bilateral talks.
