President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed lawyer Joel Anthony Viado as the new officer in charge of the Bureau of Immigration (BI), as confirmed by Malacañang on Tuesday.
Viado, who was previously the deputy commissioner of the BI, replaces Norman Tansingco, who was dismissed following the escape of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo.
Before joining the BI, Viado was a partner at a law firm and has experience working as legal counsel for multinational corporations and in the presidential management staff under President Joseph Estrada.
Senate President Francis Escudero praised Marcos for his decisive action in removing Tansingco, while the President vowed to uncover and hold accountable those who facilitated Guo’s departure.
A full-scale investigation into the incident is underway, with President Marcos promising that those involved will face severe consequences.
