President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced a service contracting program for jeepney drivers, providing payments of P40 to P100 per kilometer in addition to regular fares.
The program, starting April 15, will cover around 50,000 PUVs and 1,000 operators nationwide, benefiting an estimated 15 million commuters.
Participating vehicles will have GPS monitoring, operate during off-peak hours, and offer at least a 20% fare discount along key routes connected to trains and major bus lines.
Marcos also announced a P10-per-liter fuel subsidy for PUVs, capped at 150 liters per week for three months, starting in Metro Manila and later expanding nationwide.
The initiatives aim to support drivers and ensure reliable public transport amid rising oil prices caused by Middle East tensions.
