Vice President Sara Duterte’s early announcement of her 2028 presidential bid has drawn criticism from lawmakers who say it distracts from ongoing corruption allegations and impeachment complaints against her.
The Makabayan bloc called her move a “desperate attempt” to divert attention from the alleged misuse of P612.5 million in confidential funds.
Three impeachment complaints were filed in early February, and House members must include them in the Order of Business by February 24 to avoid procedural barriers.
Lawmakers urged Congress to prioritize accountability and public interest over political agendas, emphasizing that a conviction could remove Duterte from office and bar her from holding future posts.
Critics also warned that her presidential bid comes despite the controversial record of her father’s administration, questioning the wisdom of her leadership for the country.
