The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has signed a new agreement with Meta to strengthen the detection and removal of disinformation, deepfakes, phishing scams, and child exploitation content on Facebook.
Under the deal, Meta will immediately flag harmful posts, report them to local authorities, and take them down to protect users’ safety, finances, and reputations.
The agreement also targets fraudulent schemes that use deepfakes of public officials, business leaders, and celebrities to mislead users.
While the pact marks a major step in online safety, questions remain over how content will be flagged and who decides what qualifies as misleading or false.
The move comes amid ongoing congressional efforts to regulate social media, though lawmakers and experts caution that such measures could risk censorship.
