Expelled Cavite congressman Kiko Barzaga is facing a new cyberlibel case before a Manila court over a January Facebook post that allegedly contained defamatory remarks against Manila Second District Rep. Rolando Valeriano.
The complaint, filed by the Manila City Prosecutor’s Office, accuses Barzaga of violating the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 in relation to the Revised Penal Code’s libel provisions after alleging that National Unity Party members, including Valeriano, accepted bribes to support former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
Prosecutors said the Facebook post was widely disseminated through various online news outlets and cited sufficient evidence to warrant a trial.
Valeriano welcomed the filing of the case, emphasizing that freedom of expression does not excuse baseless allegations that damage another person’s reputation.
The prosecutor’s office recommended ₱10,000 bail for Barzaga, who was previously arrested in April on separate cyberlibel charges and later released on bail.
