The International Criminal Court (ICC) Trial Chamber III has ordered a fresh review of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s continued detention ahead of his upcoming trial.
In a May 1 order, the judges directed both sides to submit observations on whether Duterte should remain in custody or be released with or without conditions, in line with the requirement to review detention every 120 days.
Previous rulings by ICC chambers and its Appeals Chamber have denied Duterte’s requests for interim release, citing flight risk and possible threats to witnesses.
Duterte, 81, has been held at the ICC Detention Center in The Hague since his arrest and turnover to the court in March 2025.
His defense team has also sought to delay proceedings, citing his alleged poor health and unfitness to stand trial.
