Healthcare benefits and claims paid out by health maintenance organizations (HMOs) rose by 19 percent to PHP36.29 billion in the first half of the year, according to the Insurance Commission (IC).
Total expenses, including taxes, also climbed by 19.53 percent to PHP45.56 billion.
Despite higher payouts, the HMO industry posted stronger revenues, which grew by 21.3 percent to PHP47.03 billion from PHP38.7 billion a year ago.
Net income of HMOs surged by 131 percent to PHP1.47 billion, compared to PHP636.6 million in the same period last year.
The IC said these figures indicate the continued growth and profitability of the HMO industry.
