Gen. Nicolas Torre III was relieved as chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) by President Marcos after 85 days in office for defying a National Police Commission (Napolcom) order regarding the reassignment of top PNP officials. Despite Torre’s popularity for high-profile arrests and his boxing match victory against a Duterte scion, his refusal to comply with the Napolcom’s directive led to his dismissal. Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. was appointed as his replacement, promising to continue Torre’s reforms and strengthen police visibility nationwide. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the decision was “difficult but necessary,” emphasizing the importance of law and institutional authority over individuals. Torre did not face any legal charges, and there are indications he may still serve in government in a different capacity.
