The European Union and the Philippines are working toward a potential mineral cooperation agreement focused on critical raw materials and sustainable mining practices, according to EU Ambassador Massimo Santoro.
The EU, together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, is conducting joint studies to establish a shared framework for possible mineral extraction projects while ensuring consideration of environmental and indigenous peoples’ impacts.
Santoro said the discussions are still ongoing with no fixed deadline as both sides aim to align their goals on responsible mining and investment opportunities.
The proposed agreement is expected to help European businesses invest in the Philippines while strengthening cooperation in the critical mineral supply chain.
The initiative comes as the Philippines continues efforts to position itself as a key global supplier of strategic minerals.
