The Department of Agriculture is studying the implementation of a suggested retail price of P53 per kilo for locally grown rice.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the proposed SRP is still being finalized and may vary by region after consultations with stakeholders.
The DA said the measure aims to help cushion the impact of rising food and fuel prices caused by the Middle East conflict while protecting local millers and traders.
Tiu Laurel clarified that the SRP will be non-binding and will only serve as a guide for consumers and sellers.
He also said the current P50-per-kilo price cap on imported rice may be extended as the effects of the global energy crisis could continue until the end of the year.
