Janette Garin filed a resolution seeking a congressional investigation into fake news, online harassment, cyber threats, and other forms of digital abuse spreading on social media platforms.
The measure calls on several House committees to review whether existing laws remain effective in addressing cyber-enabled misinformation and attacks.
Garin said the spread of false information threatens public trust and democratic institutions, stressing that freedom of speech must come with responsibility.
Meanwhile, lawmakers Migz and Luigi Villafuerte backed ongoing efforts by the Presidential Communications Office, Department of Justice, and Department of Information and Communications Technology to combat fake news and AI-generated deepfakes.
The House is also working on a proposed “Fake News and Digital Disinformation Act” to strengthen government action against online misinformation.
