Bongga Ka, ’Day! The Annie Batungbakal Musical is set to open from September to October at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, following the success of Bagets: The Musical, with production by Viva, The Philippine STAR, and Newport World Resorts under the creative direction of the Philippine Educational Theater Association Plus.
Based on the 1979 film directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes and starring Nora Aunor, the musical follows Annie Batungbakal, an ambitious sales clerk navigating Manila’s disco scene while pursuing her dream of becoming a fashion designer.
The production will feature iconic songs by Hotdog, including “Ikaw ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko,” “Pers Lab,” and “Annie Batungbakal,” in celebration of Original Pilipino Music and the Manila sound of the 1970s.
Vic Del Rosario Jr. and Miguel G. Belmonte said the musical builds on the popularity of retro-themed productions and showcases the strength of the partnership among the three organizations.
Auditions for performers aged 18 and above were recently held at the PETA Theater Center, with rehearsals scheduled from July to September ahead of the official cast reveal.
