The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) called for greater vigilance against human trafficking, describing it as a serious and persistent threat in the country.
The Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI) said it will observe a National Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking on February 1 to encourage nationwide action.
The group highlighted various forms of exploitation, including illegal recruitment, forced labor, sexual abuse, and online threats, particularly affecting women, children, migrants, and marginalized communities.
ECMI emphasized that combating trafficking requires cooperation between the Church, government, civil society, and families, with laws and public policies playing a key role in prevention and protection.
It also urged parishes to promote awareness, safe migration education, and support for victims, while addressing root causes such as poverty and inequality.
