President Ferdinand Marcos signed Republic Act No. 12317, which resets the first regular parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to September 2026.
House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III called the law a key step toward a credible and orderly democratic transition, allowing BARMM institutions more time to strengthen governance and prepare for the elections.
The measure ensures continuity by keeping the Bangsamoro Transition Authority in place until elected officials assume office and aims to synchronize future BARMM elections with the national and local electoral calendar.
Assistant Majority Leader Zia Alonto Adiong described the law as landmark legislation that addresses logistical challenges and promotes inclusive, peaceful elections while giving the Bangsamoro people genuine democratic participation.
Lawmakers thanked President Marcos and Congress for the swift passage of the measure, which is part of the administration’s LEDAC priority legislation.
