A Davao City councilor supports stronger animal welfare measures and the possible creation of an animal welfare group following a call from Bantay Hayop Davao to improve enforcement of existing laws.
The group highlighted ongoing animal cruelty and the high number of euthanized animals due to overpopulation, urging the city to adopt humane methods like vaccination, neutering, and adoption, similar to Cebu’s model.
Councilor Lorenzo Villafuerte expressed openness to expanding committee mandates to cover animal welfare and called for ordinances promoting responsible pet ownership, including pet registration.
The City Veterinarian’s Office reported over 6,000 animals impounded in 2024, with most euthanized due to limited space, while adoption programs are being promoted to reduce euthanasia.
Bantay Hayop Davao continues to file cases against animal cruelty offenders and stresses the need for better law enforcement and accountability from pet owners.
