Agusan del Sur 2nd District Rep. Adolph Edward Plaza on Wednesday warned that the Philippines is facing a worsening “soil health crisis” threatening food production and farmers’ livelihoods.
He urged agricultural agencies to base policies on science, criticizing outdated tools and one-size-fits-all programs for degrading soil quality and lowering farm productivity.
Plaza emphasized that meaningful reform must prioritize scientific guidance over politics or tradition, citing decades of overreliance on synthetic fertilizers and fragmented interventions.
He highlighted the disproportionate impact on farmers, who face low harvests, rising costs, and limited opportunities for their children.
Plaza also called for localized soil diagnostics and invited scientists to use Agusan del Sur as a “living laboratory” to drive agricultural transformation.
